Task progress0 of 5 (0%)
68% of HVAC certification searches now go directly to Indeed and job boards instead of trade schools—costing vocational programs qualified applicants who never see your enrollment pages.

You’re losing enrollment inquiries to job boards because Google doesn’t know you offer HVAC certification, welding programs, or electrical training in your city. Your website exists. Google just isn’t showing it to people searching for what you teach. Here’s what to fix tonight.

⚡ Quick Wins for Trade & Vocational School

Fix these before anything else. No agency. No cost. Under an hour.

Why Trade Schools Rank Below Job Boards (And What Google Actually Wants)

Google treats vocational schools differently than colleges—and most trade programs aren’t built for it

Claim and optimize your Google My Business profile for every location you servehigh

Trade schools get crushed in local search because your GMB is incomplete or inactive. Google’s 3 Pack is where enrollment inquiries happen. If you’re not there, students find Indeed, Coursera, or competitors instead. One GMB = one location. If you serve 3 cities, you need 3 separate GMB profiles (or one with service area radius set correctly).

How: Go to google.com/business. Search for your school name. If you see it listed, click ‘Manage this business.’ If not, click ‘Create a business.’ Fill in: school name, exact address, phone number, website. Under ‘Services,’ add every program you offer with the format: ‘[Program Name] Certification in [City]’ (example: ‘HVAC Technician Certification in Phoenix’). Add 5+ photos of classrooms, equipment, and graduates. Enable ‘Questions & Answers’ by going to the Q&A tab and posting your first question yourself.
Build dedicated landing pages for each program × city combinationhigh

You probably have one ‘Programs’ page. Google sees that and doesn’t rank you for ‘HVAC certification in Des Moines’ because there’s no page that explicitly matches that search. Trade schools need one page per program per service area—same way a local plumber needs one page per service.

How: List your programs: HVAC, Welding, Electrical, Plumbing, etc. List your cities: if you serve 50 miles, that’s 5-8 cities. You need pages for: ‘HVAC Certification in [City],’ ‘Welding Program in [City],’ etc. Start with your top 3 programs and 3 cities = 9 pages. Each page includes: program name in the title tag and H1, city name in the first paragraph, tuition, program length, start dates, and a ‘Enroll Now’ button. Copy competitor pages and adapt for accuracy.
⚠ Common Trade & Vocational School SEO Mistakes
  • Using generic program names without city modifiers—’HVAC Program’ instead of ‘HVAC Certification in Phoenix.’ Google doesn’t connect that to local searches.
  • Treating job placement statistics as a footnote instead of a headline. Your job placement rate is your #1 ranking signal for trade schools. Put it on every program page.
  • Not responding to reviews with program names and city mentions. Google learns what you offer by reading your review responses. Wasted opportunity.
  • Mixing multiple programs into one page. ‘Our Programs’ page rankings nowhere. A dedicated HVAC page ranks. A dedicated Welding page ranks. Combined pages rank for nothing.
  • Ignoring Indeed competitor pages. The trade schools beating you on Indeed are ALSO ranking on Google. Study their pages, not their job postings.

Quick Fixes Won’t Solve a Page Count Problem.

The quick wins above improve your foundation. They’re worth doing. But they won’t fix why you’re invisible in neighboring cities.

Reality Check

Your top 5 competitors each have 150-400+ indexed pages targeting different city and program combinations. You probably have 15-30. That gap is why you’re not in the 3 Pack. Quick wins get you visibility. Comprehensive keyword coverage gets you dominance. A quick fix today (updating your GMB) helps this week. But without 300-500 pages targeting every program × city × question students search, you’ll plateau at 30-40% of the traffic you could capture. We’re not saying you need to build all those pages yourself—but you need to know the gap exists.

Count your competitor’s indexed pages in Googlehigh

If a competitor has 250 pages and you have 30, Google sees them as the authority. Knowing the gap tells you whether quick wins are enough or whether you need a bigger content strategy. Trade schools typically compete on page count, not domain authority.

How: Open Google. Search: site:competitorschool.com HVAC. Look at the bottom—Google shows ‘About X results.’ That’s NOT total indexed pages. For real count, search: site:competitorschool.com (just the domain). Scroll to the very last page of results. Multiply the last page number × 10. Example: if you see pages 1-25, that’s ~250 pages. Do this for 3 competitors. If they all have 200+ pages and you have 40, you have your answer.
Map your keyword gaps using the service × city formulamedium

This tells you exactly how many pages you’re missing. Trade schools win on math: if you offer 4 programs and serve 8 cities, you need at minimum 32 pages (plus 20-30 more for job placement, prerequisites, financing, etc.). If you have 15, you have 17 holes Google can’t fill.

How: List your programs: HVAC, Welding, Electrical, Plumbing. List your service cities: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe (example). Create a grid. Each cell = one required page. You’re missing: ‘HVAC Certification in Scottsdale,’ ‘Welding Training in Mesa,’ ‘Electrical Program in Tempe,’ etc. Now add intent-based pages: ‘HVAC Technician Job Outlook,’ ‘How Much Does Welding School Cost,’ ‘Electrical Apprenticeship vs. Trade School,’ ‘Financial Aid for Vocational Programs in [City].’ Count the gaps. That’s your roadmap.

Or we build all of this AND publish 500–2,000+ pages to your site.

Realistic Timeline for Trade & Vocational School

No guaranteed page 1 in 30 days. Here’s what actually happens.

Month 1 — Foundation

Clean up what’s broken

Month 1: Your GMB is optimized and active with service listings. We publish 150-200 pages targeting your core programs in your primary cities. You start appearing in searches you’ve never ranked for. Google crawls and indexes. You see your first influx of impressions for program + city combinations.

Month 2–3 — Momentum

First rankings appear

Month 2-3: Pages index fully. You enter the 3 Pack for 20-30 program + city keywords. Job placement pages start pulling organic traffic. Review activity increases because you’re visible. You’re getting inquiries directly from Google, not just Indeed. Competitors notice you’re ranking.

Month 4–6 — Scale

Dominating your area

Month 4-6: 400+ pages indexed. You dominate 60-80% of program + city + question searches in your service area. Direct enrollment inquiries outpace job board traffic. You’re the top local result for ‘HVAC certification in [City]’ and 10+ related searches. Enrollment comes from Google before job boards.

What Trade & Vocational School Owners Ask

How long does this actually take for a trade school?
Pages go live in 10-14 days. Indexing happens within 2-4 weeks. Real ranking movement and traffic takes 6-12 weeks because vocational programs need authority signals (reviews, backlinks) before Google ranks them high. We build the content foundation immediately—ranking acceleration happens as you accumulate social proof.
Can anyone guarantee I’ll rank #1?
No. We guarantee pages publish, index, and target the right keywords. We don’t guarantee rankings because Google controls that. What we DO guarantee: if your competitors have pages and you don’t, you won’t rank. We eliminate that gap. Ranking depends on reviews, backlinks, site age, and how much authority competitors have—factors outside our control.
My last SEO agency made things worse. How is this different?
Most SEO agencies sell promises. We sell pages. You see every page before we publish. You own the content. No black-hat tactics, no keyword stuffing, no private blog networks. Pages stay on your WordPress indefinitely. You’re not paying for monthly ‘optimization’—you’re buying a complete content library that lives on your domain forever.
Do I need a new website?
No. If your current website is on WordPress (or can be migrated), we build pages directly into it. If you’re on Wix, Squarespace, or a custom platform, we can publish to WordPress and handle the technical migration. Your domain authority transfers. We’re not starting from scratch.
What if I only serve one city?
You still need 40-80 pages. Example for one city: ‘HVAC Certification in Phoenix’ + ‘HVAC Training Near Phoenix’ + ‘HVAC Technician Salary in Phoenix’ + ‘How Much Does HVAC School Cost in Phoenix’ + same for Welding, Electrical, Plumbing = 20+ pages right there. Add ‘Financial Aid for Trade School in Phoenix,’ ‘Welding Job Outlook Phoenix,’ ‘Electrical Apprenticeship vs. Trade School Phoenix,’ etc. One city doesn’t mean one page. It means one city × many keywords and intent variations.

Pro Tips for Trade & Vocational School

1

Add LocalBusiness Schema markup to every program page. Include: school name, address, phone, program name, program length, price, job placement rate. Example: ‘LocalBusiness’ + ‘educationalOccupationalProgram’ schema tells Google you’re a registered training provider, not just a blog.

2

Seed your GMB Q&A with 10 questions trade students actually ask: ‘What’s the job placement rate for HVAC graduates?’, ‘Can I start the program part-time?’, ‘Do you offer financial aid?’, ‘What’s the tuition cost?’, ‘How long is the program?’, ‘What’s the starting salary?’, ‘Is this program accredited?’, ‘Can I transfer credits?’, ‘Do you help with job placement?’, ‘What are prerequisites?’ Answer them yourself before competitors answer with wrong info.

3

Link every program page to your job placement rate page. Link every job placement page back to relevant program pages. Internal linking tells Google what pages are related and important. Trade schools should have 3-5 internal links per page minimum.

4

Update your program pages every quarter with new graduate testimonials, current job openings in your area, and updated labor statistics. Google’s ranking algorithm rewards freshness. A program page from 2023 that hasn’t been touched ranks lower than one updated this month.

5

Track rankings for your core keywords using SEMrush or Ahrefs (free tier works). Monitor: ‘[Program] Certification in [City],’ ‘[Program] Training near [City],’ ‘[Program] School [City].’ Use Google Search Console to watch click-through rate by keyword. If you’re ranking position 5-8 but getting 0 clicks, your title/description is weak—fix it. If you’re position 1-3 and getting 5+ clicks monthly, scale that content.
